Pupils based in a school environment and accessing the Internet, Email
or network resources do so by connecting to the Glasgow Schools Network.
Fixed data lines connecting Nye Bevan House Central Server Farm (CSF)
to each school makes up the backbone of the GSN.
Basic GSN Network
Various types of recent technology has now made it viable to explore suitable
alternatives in extending the GSN to individual locations, such as but
not limited to pupils homes, hospitals etc. The technology adopted by
GCC is utilising Commercial Broadband Services (cable modem), interfaced
into a Virtual Private Network (VPN) whilst using Internet Protocol Security
(IPSEC). The network design ensures that remote connections can only receive
services if connected through the secure VPN tunnel into the GSN.
Where cable modem is not geographically available ADSL connections can
be used and as a last resort where no data cable connection is feasible
or possible a Remote Access (telephone modem R.A.S.) connection has been
developed as a contingency.
